Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly do you teach?
-The concentration is on traditional drawing. There are certain basic concepts that can be
taught in order to produce a drawing that is recognized as a good
drawing. Once these basic concepts are learned and practiced, then we
can move on to creating “art”. I sometimes use the analogy that just
because you can play the piano, doesn’t necessarily mean you are
ready to record a CD and go on a concert tour. Or, just because you can
drive a car, doesn’t necessarily mean you are ready for NASCAR or the
Indy 500. But, you can’t ever hope to be a NASCAR driver without
learning how to drive or be a concert pianist without learning how to
play the piano. Drawing is the foundation of art. I often have students
that want to learn painting before completing a drawing class. This will
only produce weak paintings. With a knowledge of basic drawing skills,
their paintings will be much stronger. The art I make, even though it is
very “cartoon-like”, would not be possible if I didn’t have a strong
foundation of traditional drawing skills. I apply those skills to
my own artwork every day.

I can’t draw a stick figure, can you teach me to draw?
-YES! People that say they can’t draw at all are some of my best
students. They have no pre-concieved notions and have not developed
any “bad drawing habits”. They are amazed at what they can do when
they see that, by the last lesson, they can draw after all.

What are your qualifications?
-I have been a professional artist, illustrator, designer and craftsman for
over 25 years. It has been my only source of income for that same
amount of time. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Austin Peay
State University in Clarksville, TN.

So after all these years, why did you decide to teach?
-Almost as long as I have been an artist, I have had people ask me if I
was ever going to teach. Teaching was always in the plans, but for the
past 19 years, my studio was in our home. Since we moved the studio
to a commercial building with parking and a convenient location, it is
now practical. Besides that, I enjoy teaching very much!
